How often does wheel balancing needs to be done?
First of all, you
need to understand that wheel balancing is a prolonging/preventative regular
maintenance service and not a correctional lifelong guaranteed service.
In fact,
wheels and tyres are never exactly the same weight all around. The wheel's
valve stem hole will usually subtract a small amount of weight from that side
of the wheel. Tyres will also have slight weight imbalances, whether from a
joining point of the cap plies or a slight deviation from perfectly round. At
high speeds, even a tiny imbalance in weight can become a large imbalance in
outward force, which could cause the wheel and tyre assembly to spin in a heavy
and uneven motion. This usually turns into a vibration that could cause uneven
and damaging wear on the tyres.
Maintaining
proper wheel balance is a critical part of maintaining the life of the tyre.
Balance Changes Over Time: As the tyre wears, the balance will slowly and
dynamically change over time. Most good tyre places
will want to rebalance when tyres are rotated. Rebalancing at least once over
the life of the tyres will almost certainly extend their lifetime. Balancing
will not prevent vibrations from
a bent wheel, out of round tyre, or irregular wear, needless to say that balancing can't
compensate for a problem that is actually physical, only for weight
differences that was already affected.
Wheels lose
balance over time, so wheel balancing service is necessary to restore proper balance. Tread wear causes the distribution of weight around the tyre to
change. This leads to an imbalance that causes the vehicle to shake or vibrate.
During wheel balancing service, our technician will use a calibrated spin
balancer. Improperly balanced wheels will be adjusted to the proper balance. Tyre
balancing is typically performed when tyres are rotated on the vehicle, which
is usually estimated at every 6 months and preferably when new tyres are being
fitted.
NOTE: While you rotate your tyres, also balance them!
